Resilience and Black Youth
Dr. Edith Chen explains the theory of skin-deep resilience in this video. Her research show that young African American students from disadvantaged neighborhoods who attended college have higher positive scientific well-being markers. In general, students who engaged in lower levels of substance use still show higher levels of specific scientific markers. This study compared a small cohort of black and brown students with white students from less disadvantaged neighborhoods. The takeaway is that higher education has both academic and emotional benefits!
